What is Aesthetic Surgery? |
| |
It is very interesting to know how cosmetic plastic surgery took its roots. During the second world war the intensity of warfare had changed completely. High velocity injuries, explosives with unheard of power, incindiery bombs changed the pattern of war casualties totally and forever. There was an unprecedented load of war casualties on the plastic surgical units all over UK. This was the time when modern plastic surgery was born. This re-constructive load opened up new vistas in understanding the human body much better. Re-constructive surgery grew in leaps and bounds and with that evolved new principles of plastic surgery. A handful of surgeons trained with Sir Harold Gillies in Rooksdown House in UK spread this knowledge far and wide.
The same principles of reconstructive surgery were later applied to first reconstruct deformed body parts and later to make ugly parts look better. For the first time we understood what I call the "Anatomy of Ugliness". It makes common sense that unless you understand what is it that makes one look ugly and what is wrong anatomically, it is not possible to correct the deformity.
Aesthetic or Cosmetic surgery is an extension of the field of plastic surgery. This primarily applies to beautifying parts of the body like the female breast, Tummy, Thighs and buttocks, making six pack abs , nice looking noses etc. This specialization of plastic surgery is as scientific and as well researched as any other field of medicine and surgery. The same exacting principles and tenets of high quality surgery are applied to this art of Beauty surgery.
Beautiful looks are at a premium. The effect of good looks need no elaboration. Looking beautiful and desirable is sort of a Fundamental right. Ever changing demands, varying perception of beauty, changing fashion trends and many such influences have put very aggressive expectations on Cosmetic surgery. Supported by technology, better understanding of tissue healing cosmetic surgeons and extending their skills in unchartered territory. Newer modalities are coming up and for the inexperienced it is a tough call to make a proper judgment and imbibe all that technology has to offer. When choosing your surgeon proper emphasis be given to experience and knowledge.
